Test match action

The Australian skipper has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 appearances with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian chair of selectors George Bailey has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will play a "major part" in the forthcoming Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that was still troubling him.

Initial reports from the squad suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the Test matches kicking off on November 21 in the WACA.

Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and felt positive about his chances of being involved.

"We're aware that the window is narrowing and there are permutations involved, aside from his injury, but additional elements," the selector added.

"The outlook is good. [We are] really confident that he will feature a major part. With luck starting in Perth. Otherwise, then we'll pick it up."

Previous Setbacks

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after scans revealed a lower back issue.

Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of several home seasons in a limited period.

Cummins stated he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the contest.

Bailey noted that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the opener.

Contingency Plans

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.

All-rounder Cameron Green was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against India as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "small issue and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."

"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the initial game as an all-rounder," Bailey explained.

"His involvement was limited to the starting games anyway. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for another day, we opted to take a cautious route."
