RAF Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with France's air force in a joint strike targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the IS group, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, located using reconnaissance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was positioned in hills just north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a series of access tunnels leading to the depot... early reports are that the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the attack on Saturday evening and every plane involved made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - alternatively referred to as ISIS - established militant control over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action demonstrates British leadership, and determination to work closely with our allies, to eliminate any resurgence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary John Healey remarked.

RAF aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syria to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of IS following its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank every member of British forces participating in this strike for their professionalism and their valour," he said. "They were part of thousands of British personnel on duty over the festive period. This action, to take out terrorist threats who pose a risk to our safety, highlights how British military are always on standby, all year round, ensuring Britain's security at home and powerful internationally."

During December, the American forces executed what it termed a "large-scale strike" on Islamic State objectives in the country, following an attack resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN reports Daesh still has between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
